Our civilization started to develop almost as soon as the first humans arrived on this planet. Our forefathers in the stone and bronze ages could not fathom the existence of the cities in which we now find ourselves living.

It is well known that people’s resistance to change can be attributed to rapid environmental shifts. People have a strong desire to maintain their old ways of living. These Mongols are all members of the same tribe.

During his trip to this long-lost tribe, photographer Hamid Sardar Afkhami took a remarkable collection of pictures, which he has now compiled into a book.

This particular people group has called the land in this area home for literally hundreds of years. There is no other people group that has as a deep understanding of and connection with the natural world as they do.

Through their shared history with reindeer, the Dukha people have created a special affinity with these animals.

Reindeer have been an important part of their culture for many centuries, and they have found that using them as a mode of transportation has been quite beneficial.

One of the close animal companions of reindeers is the reindeer, which has also been taken into consideration as their favorite form of transportation.

Children in the Dukha culture start learning how to tame and train reindeer at a very young age.

Due to the fact that reindeer are calm and submissive companions, Dukha youngsters of any size are able to get along with them.

Taking a baby reindeer for a bath is something this young girl is doing.

Dukhas are also called Tsaatans for apparent reasons, meaning reindeer herders.

Today, there are just 44 families that carry on the Dukha name. There are between two hundred and four hundred persons still alive. They, along with the amount of reindeer, are experiencing a population decline.

Besides reindeer, they can also train wolves quite well.

Small animals like rabbits are hunted in the woods and sometimes sold for two dollars.

Golden eagles nearby are also trained by Dukhas for hunting purposes. These people can teach nearly any kind of animal.

According to their beliefs, each animal and plant has a spiritual connection.

Although they have been subject to increased influence from outside, their connection to nature allows them to maintain their culture as they have been doing all these years.

If any of your family members are still around, I would appreciate it if you could forward this story to them. We have no doubt in our minds that people will value it. It’s possible that someone will add it to their list if you post it publicly. Pass the word around!
