The Orlando Humane Society founded the Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando in 1937. It is among the most renowned and longest-running animal protection groups in the region—this Pet Alliance is solely dedicated to cat’s and dogs’ health and welfare. The group has been hard at work to ensure that pets live an enjoyable and secure life and has been adamant that the community help solve cat and dog homelessness.
Pet Alliance has continuously established higher standards, and this year they want to provide compassion, love, and hope to nearly 5,200 homeless cats and dogs. Food, medical care, and housing are all provided by Pet Alliance. The average stay at their shelter for dogs is eight days and for a cat is 15 days. The animal shelters at Pet Alliance get entirely funded by the communities we serve. Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando now operates three veterinarian clinics and two pet adoption facilities.
Unexpected News
According to officials, a fire broke out at an Orlando animal shelter killed many cats Wednesday night.
Pictures posted on Twitter by Orange County Fire Rescue show firefighters, deputies, and animal welfare staff frantically seeking to help the animal trapped inside. The 23 cats went missing in the flames; however, all the dogs got saved.
The agency’s executive director, Steve Bardy, described the fire as his “worst nightmare.”
What Happened
The fire appeared to have originated in the building directly in front of the clinic, making it more difficult for the fire department to get inside the (nearby) cat’s room. The fire badly destroyed at least half of the structure. The cause of the fire remained unknown at the time. Because they were further away from the fire’s source, the rescue workers could safely remove all 25 dogs at the facility. On Wednesday, the team wasn’t sure how many cats were at the shelter, but it might have been as many as 35. Although few got saved, some of them did not survive.
After Tragic Event
After the fire at the shelter, the surviving animals got transferred to the Pet Alliance of Sanford, which has space to house and care for them.
In terms of the building structure, it’s unlikely they’ll rebuild because they were already planning to build a new Pet Alliance Orlando shelter on land they purchased on John Young Parkway. They had intended to start construction the following year.
“We are very pleased we were able to save several cats and dogs,” the Orange County Sheriff’s Office wrote on Facebook.
