You never know what kind of wildlife might knock on your door. A strange animal recently decided to take a sleep on a family’s doorstep after straying from its home, giving them an unexpected surprise.

According to a Department of Conservation Facebook post from last week, a family in Wellington, New Zealand, discovered a seal pup lounging peacefully on their porch.

It had quite the excursion, according to the Department of Conservation, climbing the seawall stairs, crossing a road, strolling along a path, ascending a driveway, and then climbing yet another set of stairs before arriving at its napping spot.

“You do not come home to see a seal curled up on your front porch every day.”

The fur seal, commonly referred to as a kekeno, is native to New Zealand. Despite the word “seal” appearing in its name, it is not a genuine seal. In terms of family, it resembles a sea lion more.

It is rather common to observe newborn seals looking like this from May to September. In New Zealand, the period when the adult males and young pups leave their colony is known as “seal silly season.”

People frequently see these seals on the streets, in parks, and perhaps even inside people’s homes during this period because they like to explore new areas and go on leisurely strolls.

The Department of Conservation wants everyone to understand that occasionally, seals may appear a little rough. Although they may appear thin or ill, with watery eyes and a cough, that is simply the way they are. Seals are hardy creatures! “Seals need relaxation, not rescuing,” was what they wrote on Facebook. Thus, give them room to operate without undue assistance.

They also advised getting in touch with the government if you discover a damaged or troublesome seal on your property. An officer arrived and relocated the drowsy seal from the porch to a more secure location away from dogs and busy roads.
