As lead singer and drummer for Genesis, Phil Collins is one of the most well-known artists in the world, having won eight Grammy awards.
Along with Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson, he is one of only three musicians to have sold over 100 million records both as a solo artist and as a band.
Collins’ love for music was first sparked by his parents’ creative energy, who raised him in London, England, on January 30, 1951.
Collins recalled that his uncle made a drum kit for him when he was just five years old out of toy drums, tambourines, triangles, and cymbals.
He said to Interview Magazine, “The old cliché is, ‘Well, at least it will keep him quiet.'”
He soon began appearing in shows at the yacht club owned by his parents.
“Back when I really started getting into performing music, the English beat culture was just getting started with groups like the Shadows,” Collins recalled. Early in the 1960s, it was.
I still remember the day I received Please Please Me. I used to set up my drums and turn up the record player loud enough to see my reflection in the mirror. I would not have to pay attention to what I was playing that way.
I made the decision to look for a teacher to help me learn how to read drum music when I reached fourteen. I assumed that I would have to work in an orchestra pit or perform in a dance band to make ends meet once the rock-and-roll fever subsided.
I learned how to read drum sheet music, but I found that my proficiency rested in simply playing what I felt.
Collin’s life took a significant turn in the 1970s. He had already been jamming with a few bands when he came across a job posting for a drummer from a band called Genesis.
After he made the decision to get in touch with them, everything changed. The group released five albums in the early years of Collins’ involvement, and a few of their singles reached the top of the charts.
Collins replaced the departing lead singer and group founder of Genesis. He played the drums and sang as well.
He expressed his discomfiture with his new role during their conversation. But he made the decision to step in and assist as the ensemble was having trouble finding a singer.
Collins not only played with Genesis but also had a highly successful solo career. He quickly rose to the top of the music industry with classics like I Do not Care Anymore, You Can not Hurry Love, and In The Air Tonight.
As Collins put it, “After being with Genesis for 25 years, I thought it was time to follow a different road in my music,” he decided to leave the group and focus on his solo career.
I am concentrating on continuing my solo career, working on some jazz projects, and writing music for motion pictures right now. I sincerely hope the folks at Genesis have the best possible future. We will be close buddies for eternity.
It was his decision to reunite with the band in 2017. They announced plans to embark on a world tour dubbed The Last Domino last year, but the pandemic forced them to postpone it.
While fans could not wait to see the trio live, Collins’ interview with BBC Breakfast raised concerns about his health among many. He revealed to the other members of his band that Nicholas, Collins’ son, would be the drummer and Collins would only concentrate on singing.
“Nic is an amazing drummer, and he can really make his sound akin to early Phil,” commented Tony Banks of Genesis. Mike and I always found that to be very fascinating.
Now that you and Phil have been playing drums together for a while, you are able to perform some of the songs together.
The musician said, “I truly want to, but honestly, I can hardly handle a drumstick with this hand,” in response to a question about why he is not playing the drums. Therefore, it is difficult due to a few physical obstacles.
My physical limitations make things difficult for me, which is very annoying because I truly want to be playing with my son up there. Additionally, I am not sure if I want to continue touring.
“I guess it is putting it to bed to some extent, because we are all men of our age,” he remarked. “Yes, I believe that generally speaking, I am not sure if I want to drive anymore.”
Collins has some health problems in the last two years that made it difficult for him to get back on his feet.
He revealed that he had nerve damage and a displaced vertebra following surgery in 2009 in an interview with Billboard. In addition, he said that he felt like he was walking “on sticks” due to a broken foot.
