National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences and the Latin Recording Academy together present Grammy Awards to recognize excellent achievements in the music industry. The winners are picked from various genres, including rock, pop music, rap R&B and country, reggae classical, gospel, and jazz, to name a few. Albums, best of year recordings, and best new artist are among the four available prizes awarded. Over 75 awards got awarded in total until now.

The Grammy Awards are the year’s first significant music awards broadcast on one of the Big Three television networks. The Grammy is one of four major yearly music awards in the United States, the others being the Academy Awards, Emmys, and Tonys. The 64th Grammy Awards will get held on January 31, 2022, at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

Nominee Selection and Entry Procedure

Instead of receiving nominated recordings, NARAS members have access to an online listening facility. During the evaluation session attended by more than 150 music industry specialists, recordings get categorized according to their content. The nominees are the five recordings with the most significant amount of votes across all categories. Review committees determine the final five nominees in each category.

Nomination Review Committee

  • General Category

This committee consists of at least 20 Voting Members of the Academy who the Trustees have approved. On the first ballot, the committee evaluates the top 20 nominees from the public membership vote, then votes privately on the top eight candidates in each category

  • For other Specific Category

These committees consist of 13–17 specialists from various areas. The committees meet to examine and listen to the top 15 choices from the general membership poll, then vote by secret ballot on the five finalists in each category.

Final Winners

Final voting ballots get sent to NARAS voting members, who can vote in the general fields and up to nine of the 30 categories. The votes are tabulated in secret by an independent accounting firm. Following the tabulation of votes, the Grammy Awards announce the winners.

Recent Controversy of “Secret Committees”

Even in the music business, the road to a Grammy has long been a mystery — but since On March 2, former Recording Academy president and C.E.O. Deborah Dugan accused the organization of widespread ballot fraud, everyone has been even more perplexed.

Dugan filed a 44-page complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, accusing the Academy of retaliation and voting irregularities.

The Recording Academy dismissed Dugan on March 2 after she “failed to execute her job duties as promised and expected,” according to a statement.

However, the Recording Academy and its ousted president, Deborah Dugan, have struck an agreement ahead of the arbitration hearings schedule. The deal was Kept private.

Last year, American pop artist Halsey, who also got snubbed for the Grammys in 2021, described the nominating process as “elusive” and expressed her desire for “greater openness or reform.”

Harvey Mason jr. has been named C.E.O. of the Recording Academy by the Trustees, starting June 1.

Putting An End To “Secret Committees.”

The Grammy Awards organizers have declared the termination of the To “Secret Committees” that have led to claims that the industry’s greatest honors are vulnerable to manipulation.

The elimination of the infamous “secret committees” that selected final Grammy nominees began on May 1 as part of a comprehensive reorganization of its Awards department. After the resignation of long-time award director Bill Freimuth earlier this month, the Recording Academy has nominated Ruby Marchand for chief awards and industry officer. Joanna Chu has got promoted to the position of vice president of awards. The new appointments go into effect right away. The removal of secret committees, which purportedly leaves final nominations to the Grammy voters and removes the prior insider curating of final nominees for most categories, streamlines the process in many ways.

Newly Appointed Duties and Background

The Chu will be in charge of the crew throughout the Awards season. She’ll report to Marchand and work with her to reinforce important Academy goals during the Awards season, focusing on diversity, equity, and inclusion. She formerly worked in the Academy’s Awards Department as a director and managing director. She also worked in Silicon Valley as one of the few female software engineers in the aerospace sector before entering the Academy.

Marchand will continue to supervise the Academy’s awards, membership, and industry relations, reporting to Valeisha Butterfield Jones, co-president. Marchand’s increased position will see her collaborate closely with the Awards team’s genre managers to reach out to musical communities across the country and beyond.

Harvey Mason jr. voiced his thoughts. “I am delighted to welcome Ruby and Joanna to their new roles as we seek to improve our award procedures from the ground up,” says the C.E.O.
