A touching photo of an elderly Chinese couple in a critical care unit holding hands has gone viral, touching millions of people worldwide. The pair has been married for almost 70 years.
According to New China, Wang Yanfang, the head nurse in the intensive care unit of Yinzhou Hospital in Zhejiang Province, eastern China, took and shared the photo.
Due to heart failure, 92-year-old Feng Ming was admitted to the intensive care unit.
Regretfully, his condition deteriorated, leading to the failure of multiple organs and the development of a lung infection.
Feng was eventually unable to speak and was dependent on a life support system to survive.
His family chose to halt his treatment and bring him home when they realized his time was running out. Before he passed away from the hospital, he had one final wish, though, and that was to visit his wife, with whom he had spent 66 amazing years of marriage.
Zhang Ping, Feng’s 95-year-old wife, was also a patient at the same hospital. She was receiving treatment for a broken thigh bone on a different floor.
“Visiting hours for the ICU are from 3:00 pm to 3:30 pm, but Feng is in such critical condition that we can not wait till then,” head nurse Wang told New China. For the old couple to see each other, perhaps for the last time, he made a special exception.
Feng’s wife was taken from the 14th floor to the third floor’s intensive care unit on a stretcher after Wang requested it, giving Feng one last chance to see her.
In a heartwarming tale, Wang related how Feng’s wife grasped her husband’s hand and said, “You do not have to worry about me,” to him in their own tongue. I can take care of myself, I swear.
When Feng heard what she said, he began to cry. A few hours later, he died quietly at home. Wang said, “I am truly delighted we made the decision to allow the elderly couple to meet and experience this precious moment.”
