Knowing How to Interpret IQ Tests

An intelligence quotient test, or IQ test for short, evaluates a person’s level of intelligence. Early in the 20th century, French psychologist Alfred Binet proposed the idea of “IQ.” These assessments provide a numerical result that indicates a person’s cognitive ability in comparison to their peers in the same age group.

Evaluating Cognitive Abilities

Tests measuring one’s intelligence quotient (IQ) assess a variety of cognitive skills, such as memory, reasoning, problem-solving, and math proficiency. Their main goal is to measure innate intelligence rather than knowledge gained from school or experiences. The Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scales and the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS) are two well-known IQ tests. The IQ score is a single result that is typically obtained from various tests. It is standardized to have a mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 15.

How to Interpret IQ Results

One hundred is considered the standard average. Above-average or below-average intellect is indicated by scores more than or equal to 100, respectively. While IQ tests are widely used, there are some who disagree with them. Some claim that the results of these tests may be influenced by cultural biases or that they do not adequately represent the whole range of human ability.

Constraints on IQ Ratings

It is critical to understand that IQ tests only evaluate one aspect of cognitive ability. Other essential components of human potential, such creativity, emotional intelligence, and practical skills, are not taken into consideration.
