Honoring customs and community

Online interest in a Dairy Queen located in the charming Wisconsin town of Kewaskum has grown significantly. The restaurant’s “political incorrectness” is plainly stated on a sign in the front window, which is the source of all the talk. What does that actually mean, though?

With sentiments like “Happy Easter,” “Merry Christmas,” and “God Bless America,” the sign is a cheerful way to mark special occasions. It facilitates the restaurant’s relationship with the local customs that have great significance for the community. In addition to spreading holiday cheer, the sign gives veterans complimentary sundaes as a way of saying “thank you” for their service.

The restaurant’s owner, Kevin Scheunemann, explains that they hung the sign almost four years ago as a symbol of their dedication to God and the nation. Following a customer’s complaint regarding the Christian music playing in the restaurant, this decision was made. The sign has not generated any additional issues after then.

Concerns about it being exclusive were recently aroused after an Oregonian tourist posted a picture of the sign on Facebook. Prior to the post being taken down, this generated a lot of conversation. While some people were offended and voiced their opinions, others agreed with what the sign said. Nevertheless, Scheunemann’s decision is supported by local business owners, who assert that patrons are free to depart if they disagree with the restaurant’s morals.

Dairy Queen would like everyone to know that they oppose Scheunemann’s methods. They emphasize in their official statement that regardless of a customer’s religious views, franchise owners and staff are required to treat them with care and respect.

The residents of Kewaskum are quite fine with the sign since they regard it as a means of expressing the owner’s beliefs. Whether you agree with the sign’s message or not, it serves as a reminder that everyone has their own customs and beliefs. A community’s diversity is what gives it life and interest.
